Sports & work injuries

Rehab built around your sport or trade.

Getting back to your sport or your job means more than just healing. Your hand needs to cope with the grip, load and repetition your activity asks of it. We build your rehab around the tasks you actually do, and work with your doctor, employer or insurer where needed.

Understanding it

What is going on?

Hands and wrists are often injured at work and in sport. This might be a sudden injury, such as a fracture, a jammed or dislocated finger, a tendon injury or a wrist sprain. It can also be an overuse problem that builds up over time from repeated gripping, lifting or tool use. Each injury needs the right balance of protection and movement while it heals, then a gradual return to full load.

Common reasons people come in

  • A jammed, dislocated or broken finger from ball sports
  • A wrist sprain or fracture from a fall
  • A tendon injury such as mallet finger
  • Pain with gripping, lifting or using tools at work
  • Recovering after hand or wrist surgery for a work or sports injury
  • A WorkSafe or TAC claim for a hand or wrist injury
Our approach

How hand therapy can help.

01

Protection and splinting

Where needed, we make a custom splint to protect the injury in the early stages, following your doctor's or surgeon's advice.

02

Movement and strength

We guide you through a graded program to restore movement, grip and strength, measuring your progress along the way.

03

Task-specific rehab

We look at the grips, tools and movements your sport or job requires and build them into your rehab.

04

Return to work or play

With your consent, we can communicate with your GP, employer or insurer to help plan a safe, gradual return to your usual duties or sport.

The road back

What recovery can look like.

  1. Protect

In the early stage, the focus is on protecting the injury and managing pain and swelling, often with a splint.

  2. Restore movement

As healing allows, we work on regaining movement in your fingers, thumb and wrist.

  3. Build strength

We gradually add grip, strength and endurance work that matches the load of your activity.

  4. Return to activity

We help you plan a staged return to training, games or full work duties, in line with your medical team's advice.

Every recovery is different. Timeframes depend on your injury, any surgery, and your treating doctor's or surgeon's advice.

When to start

Hand injuries are usually easier to manage when they are assessed early, especially finger and tendon injuries. You do not need a referral to book. If you think you may have a fracture, dislocation or tendon injury, please also see your GP or an emergency department so it can be checked properly.
